10 fab features that make our dog drying coats stand out

Dog drying coats make a huge difference to the lives of owners and their dogs, especially if those dogs are water-loving, muck magnets. Whether your dog likes to swim in the sea, the river or a lake, or manages to get mucky enough on a walk to need a bath, having a dog drying coat to put them in afterwards keeps them warm and helps them dry off, while also protecting your car and home. Equally, your dog may be having hydrotherapy sessions, in which case, just like a child after swimming lessons, having something to snuggle in afterwards keeps everyone happy.

But not all drying coats for dogs are made equal. Very careful thought and consideration went into the design of Harbour Hounds’ dog drying robes, in order to address some of the issues with others on the market and to make them as comfortable for the dogs as they are practical and easy to use for their owners.

Here is a rundown of the 10 features that make our dog drying robes stand out:

  1. Adjustable belly strap with poppers - this is a key feature of our dog drying robes. The belly strap is adjustable via three popper fastenings, to accommodate all tummy sizes, and avoids the use of velcro. Our decision not to use velcro was two-fold. Firstly, a lot of dogs (and owners to be truthful) don’t like the ripping sound of velcro, plus hair and other debris is easily caught in it. Secondly, velcro is made of plastic and Harbour Hounds has made a commitment to avoid using plastic on or in any of our products wherever possible, to make us as environmentally friendly as we can be.

  2. Wrap-around styling - once over the head, the Harbour Hounds dog drying coat is secured on the dog’s body by wrapping the adjustable strap under their belly and then over the dog’s back. There are no awkward leg holes to try and get their feet through but they also leave the dog free to move around, unlike restrictive dog drying bags.

  3. Full body coverage - the over-the-head design covers the dog’s neck and chest, while the adjustable strap brings the sides around and under, providing full body coverage, unlike dog robes that have a thin towelling belt. The only gap will be around their privates, allowing them to pee.

  4. Longer sides to cover the hind muscles - this is another key design feature. Having been active walking, running and swimming, your dog will have worked their hind muscles hard. Keeping these large muscles warm is important to avoid stiffness. Our dog drying robes have longer sides to cover those muscles and keep them warm after exercise.

  5. Tail hole for comfort - and to keep the robe in place. Being able to free the tail from the confines of a dog drying coat is crucial for your dog’s comfort. But it also helps to keep the robe snuggly in place, rather than slipping off, as can happen with coats that don’t have this feature.

  6. Turtleneck design to keep the neck dry - again no velcro but these soft towelling robes, which come in seven sizes, slip over your dog’s head and the neck can either be left in folds, folded back or pulled up and worn as a hood. This helps to keep the dog warm and to dry these areas, but also when worn as a hood, your dog will look super-cute.

  7. 100% cotton towelling - so so soft your dog will love wearing it, even at home as a dog dressing gown. Essentially though the towelling quickly wicks away moisture and traps air and body heat, to keep your four-legged friend warm after swimming, a bath or wet walk. Again the decision to go with towelling was not simply about aesthetics but also about our commitment to no plastic, which is the stuff of microfibre fleece. Although robes made in those fabrics can use recycled plastic, it is plastic all the same and will end up in the ground eventually.

  8. Machine washable and tumble-dryable - so important when you have dogs who just love to get wet and mucky. Our robes can go in the washing machine and tumble drier time and time again, making them quick and easy to turn around for the next time they are needed.

  9. Nautically stylish colourways - we were inspired by our love and passion for the beauty of coastal living but not by the colours of other dog drying coats on the market. We decided to introduce some nautical style and fun into our drying robes and are very excited about other designs we have in mind. Watch this space!

  10. Customisable with your dog’s name - this may not seem like an essential item but if you have more than one dog and matching coats having their names on them is a boon. Plus it's a lovely touch. Personalised dog drying coats are embroidered with the dog’s name to give them that extra-special touch and also make them perfect gifts for any dog or dog owner.
