WINTER WALKS IN LOCKDOWN

Thank goodness for our dogs…as lockdown continues through winter, walking Nelly has been the one thing I can honestly say has kept me sane, through these strange times. Getting out and about in the fresh air for a bit of exercise with my 4-legged friend really has helped lift my mood and help me think more clearly. I’m sure you can relate to the same.

We are so fortunate to be based in such a stunning coastal area, with so many beautiful local walks, but I still go back to mine and Nelly’s favorite spot, West Wittering Beach. When the tide is out the beach is vast. It gives us plenty of room to relax with distance from others and enjoy the sound of the waves, sand dunes and distant views of the South Downs. It’s wonderful therapy.

So, where are you taking your walking therapy?

We’ve asked a few of our Harbour Hounds friends around the country to tell us about their favourite winter lockdown walks …

Paul, Roco & Monty

“Our dogs Rocko and Monty love a walk in Windsor Great Park. Rocko is a rescue Rottweiler from the (Windsor branch of Battersea dogs home) and Monty is Springer bread by my son and his girlfriend who are both vets down in Devon.

We have a Members Pass for the park, which means we get access to car parks that the general public can not. It’s really handy at busy times like Bank Holidays and Lockdown. It also means we are away from non-dog walkers, which is one of the many great things about Windsor Great Park - it is so big, there are areas for many activities.  Walkers, runners, families, polo, horse riders, cyclists and dog walkers all have an area.

The other good thing is the gardens and trees themselves, each time you go there is something new to see and you have so many places to walk, it really is amazing. Although I do mix it up with walks to the local park and to St Anne’s Hill to keep it interesting.”

Molly, Soxi & Lulu

“Soxi and Lulu just love going for walks all over the Isle of Wight.

We rescued them from the streets of Bangkok when we were living over there and brought them with us to live in Cowes. Their favourite walk has to be around Carisbrooke Castle and up onto Tennyson Down. They love running through the fields and taking in all the wonderful smells. The views are pretty good too – not only looking down onto the castle itself, but also down onto the coast. If you time it right you can also get some magnificent sunsets.

After all the fun and excitement, Soxi and Lulu love nothing more than to snuggle by the fire and dream of the wonderful life they are living here on the beautiful Isle of Wight.”

Sarah, NimNims & Matty

We are very lucky to live right in the middle of glorious Hampshire countryside. Surrounded by fields full of nature, our walks are almost always local. NimNims is getting on now at 11 years old but still has amazing eye sight and just loves to run as fast as he can in the fields. A rescue found with fractured ribs and teeth… he loves his life now.

His brother (from another mother) Matty a Leonberger, was a also a rescue, from the island of Corfu. I bought him back myself as a puppy, after finding him locked in a derelict building. He’s just a big gorgeous bundle of fluff and loves his field walks just as much as NimNims.

We wouldn’t be without them….
