How do the EM® ceramic beads in tick collars work?

Preventing ticks from latching on to our dogs is a key concern for dog owners and Harbour Hounds’ handmade EM® Tick-off Necklaces have been designed specifically to help do just that. But what, we hear you ask, is EM? How does it work? And how does it prevent ticks from attaching to dogs?

Here we look at what the EM® in our EM® Tick-off necklaces stands for, how this ground-breaking, natural technology works and how it can benefit your dog.

What does EM® stand for?

EM® stands for Effective Micro-organisms®. EM® technology was developed by Japanese scientist Dr Teruo Higa, comprising three key groups of microbes - yeast, photosynthetic bacteria and Lactic Acid bacteria. This technology has been applied to a range of microbial-based products, the main one being EM-1, a liquid culture that features in all others.

How do Effective Micro-organisms® work?

People-friendly, environmentally safe and beneficial, Effective Micro-organisms® positively influence and regenerate the microbial environment in which they exist or are applied. These environments include soil, plants, skin and household surfaces. They are microscopically small, living creatures that continue to work in every environment where they are used, ultimately becoming dominant to the detriment and eventual elimination of harmful bacteria.

The EM® brand encompasses a growing range of microbial products, used in agriculture, environmental purification, healthcare and animal husbandry, including pet care.

What are EM® ceramics?

EM® ceramics are clay fermented with Effective Micro-organisms® and baked at high temperatures to capture the DNA of the Effective Micro-organisms®. The resulting ceramics, such as the EM® ceramic beads (or pipes as they are also called) that are used in Harbour Hounds range of natural tick repellent necklaces, emit non-evasive, far infrared waves - the longest invisible wavelengths in the light spectrum and are rapidly becoming popular in natural health applications, including physiotherapy. Compatible with human and animal tissue, far infrared waves are easily absorbed and penetrate the tissue up to 7.5cm deep, where they help to improve blood circulation and create a healthy skin microbiome.

Designed to be worn loosely around your dog’s neck, Harbour Hounds’ EM® Tick-off Necklaces each feature several EM® ceramic beads, whose embedded ‘good’ micro-organisms improve your dog’s coat, skin microbiome and their natural immunity, which in turn repel ticks.
