Taking Your Dog on Holiday This Autumn? Here Are Our Top Tips

Over the years a growing number of companies have recognised the need to cater to all of our four-legged friends - particularly when it comes to holiday spots. More and more Airbnbs, holiday homes, and hotels are now open to letting your pets visit with you and your family. This has become much more common, which is why in this article, we are sharing some of the essential ‘must pack’ items for you and your pup

1. Pick A Dog-Friendly Location

When travelling or going on a staycation with your dog, it’s important to pick the right location. You want to ensure that your dog can join you in all of the fun. Many hotels and B & B’s won’t allow dogs to be left in the room alone, so you need to ensure you can take your pup with you on all of the outings before deciding on where you are going to spend your holiday. For sure, you want your pup to enjoy the holiday as much as you.

From dog-friendly pubs and cafes to hotels, Airbnbs,  eateries, and even cinemas, dogs are welcome in more places than ever before. Our top tip is to look at the area before settling on one specific spot. Many beaches that don’t allow dogs in the summer, allow them to enjoy the beach in the Autumn, so check out the local rules.

Also, where you are staying is another consideration to take into account. It is always a good idea to get a spot with a garden. Many Airbnbs or holiday homes now have options for an outdoor space, which are ideal if you are travelling with your dog.

Some real dog-friendly accommodations even provide dog beds and bowls. We love these places as they are clearly dog lovers like us.

2.  Travelling Overseas

Since Brexit, the rules of travelling with your dog in the EU have changed and have not made the process easy. However it is still possible, so make sure you check the details for the new AHCs ( Animal Health Certificates) with your vet. Timing is key for some of the vaccines required, so don’t leave it until the last minute.

However, for pet parents that are planning to stay in England and enjoy the autumn weather,  it is also important to have all your dog's vaccinations up to date.  You don’t want your pet catching any nasty viruses or getting ill, on or after your trip.

In addition, ensure your dog wears an identification tag with your current contact (name and mobile number) details on it. This is a UK and EU requirement and important if your dog goes astray. There are also some great trackers on the market which are well worth investing in if you have a wandering pup.

3. Packing Their Essentials

Next up…time to pack, everything your dog needs! Much like you would pack your own suitcase, ensuring that you have everything your pup will need whilst you are away is a must.

Here at Harbour Hounds, we are all about getting your dog suited and booted for exploring. Our dog drying robes are perfect for keeping your dog warm while drying off after a dip in the sea or a wet walk. Our robes help to reduce their overall muscle stress, and any tension they may be feeling and prevent injury, by keeping them warm. They are practical, and easy to pack alongside your pup’s other essential items. They work to wick away moisture and trap in body heat, keeping your four-legged friend snuggly as they snooze and dream about the day's adventures. Ohh and not to mention, they are super stylish too… they’ll be turning heads on their vacation

If you are planning on taking a muddy walk or strolling along the beach in your time away, then we would suggest getting your paws on a dog-drying robe and packing it in your essential items.

Other must packs would be:

  • Collar or harness (obviously) and don’t forget the lead

  • Bed, or blankets

  • Dog food and treats

  • Water bowls (for the room and when you’re out and about)

  • Brush (soft ones are great for brushing off the sand)

  • Shampoo and hand towel

  • Poo bags

  • For us and many others…never forget the all-important ball

4. Fun For Your Dog Too

As well as the essential items, it's also a great idea to bring toys with you. As we’ve said above, the holiday should be fun for all your family members, including your dogs! Toys are a great way to prevent boredom, and will also keep your pup feeling right at home.
Dogs have the tendency to stash or carry around their toys with them. This is completely normal behaviour that shouldn’t be discouraged, and you may find that if they are staying in a new place, then they will be doing this more often. This is because the toys are familiar, and offer a sense of safety and security for them. Packing some of their ultimate favourites is a great idea, and it will also offer them something to do in your holiday downtime.
